Federal authorities has advised for caution as some states governments has announced dates for the reopening of schools within the state

Lagos state and Osun state in the south west Nigeria has announced that tertiary institutions will reopen from 14 and 21 September, 2020.

The minister of Health said that, Covid-19 still has the power of taking life and still remains a threat to the society. Meanwhile, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warn Nigerian Government not to reopen Nigerian tertiary institutions for now

ASUU said that government should not reopen higher institutions until they have found a concrete solution to spread of corona virus in the country.

The union also cleared that as it is currently, it is difficult for tertiary institutions to practice social distances which is one of PTF guidelines on covid-19.

List of Nigerian Schools Resumption Date.

“Nigerian Schools Resumption Dates Announced”

Below are the lists of Nigerian schools resumption date as announced by their state governments, all the Nigerian schools listed below are advised to resume on the resumption date. Students are also advised to resume and comply with covid-19 guideline.

  1. Osun State Schools: Both primary, secondary as well as universities will reopen on 21 September, 2020 for Osun state according to the state government’s order to all schools for the state after the schools has been locked down for more than six months because of  Covid- 19 pandemic.
  2. Kogi State Schools: Kogi state government for north-central Nigeria on Tuesday, announce the reopening of schools at all levels on 14 September, 2020, The Nigerian schools reopening date for Kogi State includes, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions in the state, according to Wemi Jones the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology.
  3. Lagos State Schools: Lagos state government has directed that basic schools should resume on 14th September, 2020 and tertiary institutions to resume for 21 September.

Currently, only students for final year exams or national exam classes are in schools across the 36 states of Nigeria, since 4th August, 2020 in order to write examinations like WAEC and NECO.

The Minister of state for Education, Hon. Emeka Nwajiuba says Federal Government has not given date to reopen universities across the country but Nigerian schools resumption date announcement by some state governments dey has caused parents to worry.

What Parents Are Saying About Nigerian Schools Resumption Date

Parents of students who are in examination class for secondary schools has shared their reactions as government ordered students who are in Junior and senior secondary school 3 to resume.

Some of them who spoke to Information Drillers said that it is good as government ordered for schools resumption while others says they are not too okay since the coronavirus pandemic has not been eradicated completely.

After Nigeria government through the Ministry of Health, announced that schools may reopen for students in exiting classes, different state for the country also said classes may resume for the schools.

One of the parents said the students in these classes are not too small and they will be taken care of and observe safety measure like to wash their hands and wear face mask. She added that government should ensure that students should not be too plenty in each class. She said they should not be more than 20 in each class.

Another parent, Olajide Funke, says students suppose to have resumed long time ago so that they won’t forget what they have been learning in school.

“They supposed to reopen school since and make sure that student are wearing nose mask and they are washing their hands,” she say.

Funke said everybody knows what is going on in the country but doesn’t mean activities should stop for the sake of the pandemic.

But Jide Jinadu whose child is in school in Lagos State said students should not resume. Adding that Lagos state is the the epicenter of coronavirus in Nigeria..

“They should wait a little while until we are certain enough because they are still children. They are done with school already. they are only left with writing their WAEC and they can do that when when the pandemic is settled.” Jinadu said.

A parent whose child in school in Lagos state said that it’s only God that will protest their children.

What is ASUU Saying About Nigerian Schools Resumption Date?

Despite that some states higher institutions has  declared their schools reopening date for Nigeria, federal institutions and some private universities insist that they will only ask the students to return to school when ministry of education has issue an official announcement for the reopening of schools.

Authorities of some federal and private institutions they have no plans at all to reopen their schools until the federal government give them the order to do so.

Chairman University of Lagos branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Dele Ashiru says, it was  federal government that closed the universities in the country and its the government that will still reopen the schools.

He added that they don’t have any resumption date because federal government has not announce when they should resume for academic session.

When is Schools in Nigeria Resuming?

The resumption date for schools in Nigeria has not been announced officially by Federal Government but some states like, Lagos, Osun and Kogi States has announced their schools resumption date.

What are The Criteria For Entering into The School Vicinity?

  • One of the criteria for entering into the school vicinity is your Norse Mask, which is very important in other not to spread virus.
  • Another very important criteria is Maintaining social distancing, avoiding handshake and very close interact.
  • Entering into the school vicinity without washing and sanitizing your hand will not be allowed as white bucket filled with clean water, sanitizer and soap will be provided by the school authorities.
